At the beginning of the development of the department was the course of stomatology which was founded in the Department of Traumatology and Field-Military Surgery in 1945. A.Y.Koval was the head of it.
After the stomatological faculty of Donetsk Medical Institute named after M.Gorky was organized (1963) the chair of Surgical Dentistry (1965) was managed by Professor A.A.Grinchenko. The Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of Donetsk Scientific Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics was the base of the department up to 1969.The new dental bulk of Donetsk Municipal Central Clinical Hospital #1 with maxillofacial departments has become the base of the department since 1969:the department for adults consisting of 70 cots (after reduction since 1997- of 50 cots) and children's consisting of 40 cots (after reduction since 1997- of 30 cots).
Professor Anatoliy Alexandrovich Grinchenko had been the first head of the department since 1965 to 1973. A.A.Grinchenko was born in 1927 in Rostov-on-Don. In 1959 he graduated from the medical faculty of Rostov Medical Institute. In 1962 he defended the candidate thesis on the topic " The Materials for Learning of Cartilaginous Transplants in Plastics of the Maxillofacial Area. (the scientific instructor- Professor Z.I.Kartashev). In 1967 he defended the doctorate thesis on the topic:"The Primary Restorative Operations in the Maxillofacial Area during Eradication of Malignant Tumors". He attended the whole course of the lectures of the head of the chair of surgical stomatologyof Kiev Medical Institute Professor Y.I.Bernodskiy, he worked at his thesis under the guidance of the famous scientists such as academician N.N.Blohin, Professors F.M.Hitrov, Z.I.Kartashev. The scientific researches of Professor A.A.Grinchenko were reported and published in the International Congress:" The Combined Fractures of the Jaws with Cranio- Cerebral Trauma "-11 Stomatological Congress, Bulgaria, Sophia, 1971.
Since 1973 to 1995 Professor Edward Nikolayevich Samar had become the head of the department. E.N.Samar was born in1937 in Kharkov. In 1960 he graduated from Tashkent Medical Institute. Since 1962 to 1964 he had studied at the clinic residency in the Department of Surgical Dentistry of the Central Institute of Improvement of Doctors' Specialization (Moscow). As a result of the research work under the guidance of V.N.Dmitrieva was defence of the candidate thesis on the topic:" The Surgical Elimination of Postoperative Defects and Deformation of the Palate after Uraniumstaphyloplastics " in 1964.In 1987 he defended the doctorate thesis on the topic:" The Peculiarities of Surgical Treatment of Patients with Congenital Cleft Palate in Different Age ". In 1988 he was awarded with Professor rank. In 1991 Professor E.N.Samar was chosen to be the member of the European Association of Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgeons. Professor E.N.Samar is the author of more than 160 published works, 8 patents of inventions, co-author of 2 monographs, 11candidate and 2 doctorate theses were defended under his guidance. One of the first Interregional Center of Treatment and Rehabilitation of Children with Congenital Development Defects of Face and Jaws was organized under his guidance and with his participation in our country. The materials of Professor E.N.Samar's research work were reported during the international conferences, congresses, All-Union and Republic Congress of stomatologists and published in the well-known scientific editions and abroad.
Since 1995 to 1998 the Department of Surgical Dentistry was united with the Department of General Surgery. At that moment Professor Valentine Nikolayevich Butsenko was the head of the united chairs.
Since 1998 Professor Igor Nikolayevich Matros-Taratens has become the head of the department. I.N.Matros-Taranets was born in 1963 in Mariupol, Donetsk region. After graduation from Donesk Medical Institute in1986 he worked as a dental surgeon, then he became the head of maxillofacial department of Hospital of the first medical aid in Mariupol. Since 1990 he has become an assistant, since 1997 - assistant professor of the department. In 1994 under the guidance of Professor E.N.Samar he defended the candidate thesis on the topic:" The Biomechanical Grounds of the Elaborated and Well-Known Methods of Treatment of Fractures of the Lower Jaw". In 2001 I.N.Matros-Taranets defended the doctorate thesis on the topic: "Traumatic Injury of the MaxillofFacial Area: Infrastructure, Regularities of Local Muscular Damages, Ways of Treatment ". In 2002 he was awarded with Professor rank. He is the author of 7 monographs, 6 textbooks, 216 published works and 25 inventions.
The scientific research work of the chair deals with the problems of traumatology, of maxillo-facial area, congenital development defects of face, tumors, restorative surgery of face and jaws. 3 doctorate theses, 25 candidate ones were written by the collaborators of the department. 6 doctors from Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Lebanon, Syria, Congo, Jordan finished post-graduate course. 25 finished clinical residency. 4 of them from are from Lebanon, 2 of them are from Syria, 1 from Bangladesh, Jordan, Yemen. 12 doctors-military students, 3 masters, 16 clinical residents (14 of them with the contract, 13 of them are foreigners) got post-graduate education last 5 years. At this moment 8 clinical residents and one post-graduate student are studying there.
Since 1999 Interregional Center of Children's Maxillofacial Surgery has begun its functioning in the clinic.
It is one of 5 centers in Ukraine organized due to the order of Minister of Public Health of Ukraine (Order №209 on 18.08.09)

Since September 2004 start Internet-Project "Telesurgery and Teletraumatology of Maxillofacial Area, Telestomatology". During 3 years we have carried out over the 120 teleconsultations, including 56 on the international level (Russia,
Lebanon, Kazakhstan, Germany, USA, Austria, Azerbaijan, Great Britain, Italy, Portugal, Siriya, Solomon Island, Uzbekistan)
